The south may be increasingly gentrified and stuffy, but not so at these coastal communities. Home to some of the most laid-back surfers, fishermen, and professional hammock sleepers in the world, these enclaves are surefire places to check in and tune out. Add humidity, cheap drinks and affordable lodgings and you’ll be a shoeless, free-loving, tanned southern hippie in a North Carolina minute, which is as loooong as you want it to be.

St Augustine, Florida: A mecca of hippy culture, St Augustine is known for its drum circles, street musicians and boat dwellers. Founded in 1565 by the Spanish, it is the oldest functioning city in America. This beautiful and fascinating port is not only super friendly, it is also super commercial—a drawback for the strapped beach bum but perfect for shoppers ready for a trippy shopping spree. History and many different influences make this one of the most eclectic beaches in the South.

A Florida Couple Tried to Build the World’s Largest Functioning Yo-Yo…But When They Tried to Use It, Things Didn’t Go Well

minutesofmayhem:

A couple in Jacksonville, Florida tried to break the world record for largest functioning yo-yo, and started by building one that weighed almost 7000 lbs

But the thing didn’t even come close to working. To beat the record, it had to be dropped from at least 75 feet, and go up and down at least three times. But instead, it got to the end of the rope, slipped off, and came crashing to the ground

Jacksonville has a new Hip-Hop artist in town, and his name is Trey!

What does the military and hip-hop have in common? Trey, a southern-rapper from Jacksonville, FL. Born February 23, 1989 with a passion for success and a gift for words.

He started rapping at the age of 13 by writing the lyrics to Ludacris’ Back For The First Time and 2pac’s Me Against The World, memorizing the words, and later rapping them to his friends.

His love for words originally expressed through poetry, was later introduced to rap with instrumentals brought to him by his brother Tim at age 17.

His early start in creating visual and storytelling with words through poetry to swoon the ladies is still a huge influence in his music style today. Rappers 2pac, Jay-Z, and J. Cole are his biggest motivators he states.

Overcoming his rough child hood and brief run in with the law in 2009, Trey has used misfortune and setbacks to motivate himself to achieve something greater. Enlightening others by using his journey to motivate the world and entice his listeners to reach for their dreams and accomplish their goals.

Took some photos of the Jacksonville skyline the other night. I think this one’s my favorite though.

A new convention center would also allow for the Prime Osborne to be converted back into the transit center it should be, an essential element to any future high speed rail plans, as well as a potential launching point for smart Skyway expansion or the deployment of light rail. Properly utilizing what is currently empty riverfront space would also serve to increase the prestige and value of the downtown area, even when conventions were not active. It would have very positive effects on the Landing and Bay St. entertainment.

A new convention center adjacent to our city’s largest hotel on the St. Johns River is the first step for downtown’s redevelopment. Leveraging the 963-room Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront as a headquarter hotel with its 110,000 square feet of meeting space, as well as the existing entertainment options at The Jacksonville Landing and in the Bay Street area, will establish Jacksonville as a destination with strong appeal for future convention business.
